Fuel efficient cars: A Toyota guide for fuel-conscious drivers

Mar 06, 2018

If you’re looking for a fuel-efficient car the first thing to think about is what kind of vehicle you are looking for.

Opting for an alternative powertrain like a hybrid will deliver better fuel efficiency than a gas-only vehicle. Smaller cars will get better mileage than larger options.

Whatever your requirements, Toyota has a strong track record on fuel efficiency, with multiple models recognized for delivering outstanding fuel economy in their respective segments**.

Here’s a vehicle-by-vehicle guide to fuel efficiency in the Toyota car lineup:

Toyota hybrids

Hybrids are a great place to start when it comes to fuel efficient cars.

With over 10 million hybrids sold worldwide, and seven versions available in the Canadian market, Toyota continues to innovate with the latest in battery technology honed by years of experience in hybrid development.

Toyota’s fuel efficiency champions come from the Prius model range—with the popular Prius, compact Prius c, and larger Prius v offering combined fuel economy ratings of 4.5L/100km, 5.1L/100km and 5.8L/100km, respectively.

But with a Prius you don’t just fuel efficiency, you get intelligent technology and style inside out.

The latest addition to the Prius lineup takes things even further. The Prius Prime is the most advanced Toyota Hybrid ever built.

Toyota Prius Prime Plug In

A plug-in hybrid, the Prius Prime has greater battery capacity giving it an EV mode range of 40km. When not in EV mode the Prius Prime achieves a combined city/highway fuel efficiency rating of 4.3l/100 km.*

Impossibly beautiful and remarkable efficient. The 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid is for those who crave the irresistible sophistication, style and excitement.

On top of its sleek design, the redesigned  Camry Hybrid enjoys combined city highway fuel economy from 4.9L/100km with the Camry LE Hybrid.     .

Gasoline-powered cars

Of course, it isn’t only Toyota hybrids that deliver exceptional fuel efficiency in their category. Across the Toyota lineup, there are a variety of proven fuel-saving technologies that help improve efficiency, reduce emissions and save you money.

Yaris (from 6.6L/100km Combined*)

Yaris Sedan

Toyota’s compact Yaris series delivers exceptionally fuel efficient performance, too. Yaris Sedan models with automatic transmission offer up a combined fuel economy rating of 6.6L/100km (6.8L/100km for manual), and the Yaris Hatchback with manual transmission lands at 7.2L/100km, and 7.4l/100km in an automatic.

Corolla (from 6.9L/100km Combined*)

The Toyota Corolla is one of the world’s best-selling vehicles and delivers combined consumption at 7.5L/100km in the CE, SE and LE trims. This is matched by the Corolla iM Hatchback CVT trim.

The Corolla LE ECO CVT is even more fuel efficient, achieving 6.9L/100km.

Designed to delight  and fitted with more standard equipment than ever, the Corolla is a smart choice that is brimming with value.

Camry (From 6.9L/100km* Combined)

The transformed 2018 Camry has been redesigned inside and out. This means that in addition to stunning style and innovative technology, the Camry is engineered for a drive that is both engaging and fuel efficient.

The Camry L achieves a combined city/highway fuel consumption rating of 6.9L/100km, though fuel efficiency varies between different trim. In addition to its styling, the Camry is one of the most reliable and most generously-equipped models in its segment.

Driving Fuel Efficiency

Regardless of size, shape and capability, all Toyota models reward owners with outstanding fuel efficiency.

Toyota Valvematic engines, for instance, are used in the Corolla LE ECO, Corolla iM and the C-HR.

Toyota C-HR Valvematic Engine

Valvematic engines employ a highly effective valve management system that optimizes engine breathing in real time for improved performance. Fuel efficiency is fine-tuned in real-time against driving conditions and driver intentions.

Valvematic engines are optimized to deliver the most driving range and performance from every drop of fuel they burn.

Other innovations include the Start/Stop system, which is available in select models to limit wasteful idling. When the vehicle comes to a stop at a traffic light or in a drive-thru line, the engine shuts off -- while all accessories continue to function. When the driver releases the brake, a high-speed starter motor restarts the engine instantly. The result? Idling -- and the associated fuel use and emissions are virtually eliminated.

Further, with the extensive use of advanced 6 and 8 speed transmissions, and the use of proven fuel-saving Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) technology, Toyota pairs its fuel-efficient engines with fuel efficient transmissions to ensure low fuel consumption figures.

Many models come equipped with an ECO drive mode, accessible at the press of a button, to reconfigure various systems for maximum efficiency. Select models even offer on-screen visual coaching to help drivers discover habits that minimize fuel use on every trip.
