Maintaining your battery when your vehicle isn’t in use
Your Toyota was made to be driven regularly – so leaving your Gas or Electrified Vehicle parked for an extended period in cold weather can drain your car battery and cause damaging crystal buildup. If your vehicle will be sitting unused for extended periods of time, consider using a trickle charger or battery tender — it slowly recharges the battery, keeping it charged up until you’re ready to get behind the wheel. For more information on maintaining your battery’s health, check out your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual.
If your vehicle needs a new battery, your Toyota University Trained Technician will replace it with a Toyota Premium Battery, which ensures optimal performance and reliability while providing the right specifications, such as cold cranking amps (the battery’s ability to start a vehicle’s engine in cold weather) and reserve capacity.
Here are some additional tips to be mindful of when preparing your vehicle’s battery for cold weather:
- Check your battery’s terminals for corrosion – your battery may be healthy, but corroded terminals can result in a failed connection.
- Make sure accessories within your vehicle, such as the radio and lights, are turned off when not in use to avoid draining the battery.
- As the battery state sensor assembly is installed on the negative (-) terminal of the 12-volt battery in some models, it is highly recommended not to disconnect the battery terminals under any circumstances.
- Always keep a winter safety kit with jumper cables in your vehicle.
